Understanding
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer develops when abnormal cells lining the air passages or alveoli multiply rapidly, forming malignant tumors in pulmonary tissues. Left unmanaged, malignant cells can invade regional thoracic structures or spread metastatically through the bloodstream to distant organs such as the brain, liver, or bones.
Because early-stage lung cancer may cause subtle or non-specific symptoms, accurate anatomical staging, tissue diagnosis, and biomarker testing are important for treatment planning. At Vanya Health, thoracic oncology care is planned according to tumor stage, histology, molecular findings, lung function, and the patient’s overall condition.
Primary Classifications of Lung Cancer We Treat
Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)
Represents approximately 85% of lung cancers and includes adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other subtypes. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or immunotherapy depending on the stage, histology, molecular profile, PD-L1 expression, and the patient’s overall health.
Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)
An aggressive, rapidly growing carcinoma strongly associated with tobacco exposure. Limited-stage disease is commonly treated with platinum-based chemotherapy and concurrent thoracic radiation, while extensive-stage disease is generally treated with systemic therapy, often including platinum-etoposide chemotherapy with immunotherapy when clinically appropriate.
Other Thoracic Malignancies
Pleural mesothelioma and pulmonary carcinoid tumors are distinct thoracic cancers rather than primary subtypes of lung cancer. Their management depends on tumor type, stage, resectability, and patient factors and may involve surgery, systemic therapy, and/or radiation.
Causes & Potential Risk Factors
While tobacco smoking remains the primary etiology, non-smoking clinical risk factors account for a significant proportion of diagnoses in India:
Tobacco & Beedi Smoking
Tobacco smoke contains multiple carcinogens that can damage DNA in respiratory cells and substantially increase lung cancer risk.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
Exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke increases lung cancer risk in people who do not smoke.
Air Pollution & Biomass Smoke
Long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution, including particulate matter, and indoor biomass smoke is associated with increased lung cancer risk.
Occupational Carcinogens
Prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers, radon gas, silica dust, or heavy metals (arsenic, chromium).
Genetic Predisposition
Family history and inherited genetic susceptibility may contribute to lung cancer risk in a minority of patients, including some people who have never smoked.
Symptoms & Early Warning Signs
Lung cancer symptoms vary based on tumor size, airway invasion, and distant metastatic spread:
-
Persistent or Worsening Cough: A new cough that does not resolve, or a noticeable change in a long-standing cough, should be medically evaluated, particularly when accompanied by other concerning symptoms.
-
Hemoptysis (Coughing up Blood): Phlegm or sputum tinged with blood, even in small quantities.
-
Shortness of Breath & Wheezing: Unexplained dyspnea resulting from airway obstruction or pleural fluid accumulation.
-
Persistent Chest Pain: Dull or sharp aching in the chest, shoulder, or back exacerbated by deep breathing or coughing.
-
Hoarseness of Voice: Persistent voice change caused by tumor pressure on the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
-
Unexplained Weight Loss & Fatigue: Unintentional weight loss, reduced appetite, or persistent fatigue can occur in lung cancer but may also have many other causes.
Advanced Diagnosis & Precision Staging in India
Precise anatomical localization and molecular biomarker profiling dictate modern thoracic care plans. Vanya Health facilitates diagnostic evaluations using advanced protocols:
-
CT Imaging: Low-dose CT (LDCT) is primarily used for lung cancer screening in eligible high-risk individuals. When lung cancer is suspected or diagnosed, diagnostic contrast-enhanced chest CT and other appropriate imaging are used to characterize the tumor and assess disease extent.
-
PET-CT Whole-Body Scan: Evaluates metabolic activity within thoracic lesions and maps mediastinal or distant metastatic involvement.
-
EBUS-TBNA (Endobronchial Ultrasound Biopsy): Minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that allows real-time biopsy of mediastinal lymph nodes under ultrasound guidance without surgical incisions.
-
Image-Guided CT/US Biopsy: Percutaneous needle biopsy to retrieve lung tissue samples for histopathology.
-
Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) & Molecular Profiling: Identifies actionable genomic alterations such as EGFR, ALK, ROS1, KRAS, BRAF, MET, RET, and other relevant biomarkers. PD-L1 expression is assessed separately, usually by immunohistochemistry, to help guide immunotherapy decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the success rate of lung cancer treatment in India?
Outcomes in lung cancer vary substantially according to stage, tumor biology, molecular profile, treatment received, and the patient’s overall health. Early-stage disease generally has better outcomes than advanced disease. Targeted therapies and immunotherapies have improved outcomes for selected patients with advanced NSCLC, but an individual prognosis should be discussed with the treating oncology team.
What is the advantage of VATS or Robotic Surgery over traditional open surgery?
VATS and Robotic Thoracic Surgery use small keyhole incisions rather than a large thoracotomy (spreading the ribs). Compared with open thoracotomy, minimally invasive approaches such as VATS and robotic surgery can reduce postoperative pain and length of hospital stay in appropriately selected patients. Recovery time and complication risk vary according to the operation, patient health, and clinical circumstances.
Can non-smokers get lung cancer?
Yes. A significant percentage of lung cancer patients—especially women in Asia diagnosed with EGFR-mutated Adenocarcinoma—have no history of smoking. Environmental pollution, passive smoke exposure, radon gas, and genetic factors play major roles.
Can SBRT or CyberKnife replace surgery for lung cancer?
For selected patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer who are medically inoperable or cannot safely undergo surgery, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), delivered using an appropriate radiation platform, is an established non-surgical treatment option that can provide high rates of local tumor control. SBRT also has potential treatment-related risks and requires specialist assessment.
Can international patients obtain a second opinion before traveling to India?
Yes. Vanya Health can facilitate medical record review and specialist consultations, helping patients understand available treatment options before making travel arrangements.
